The buildings of the Archabbey and the surrounding area were officially declared a part of the World Heritage in 1996 In Pannonhalma you have free time to explore the city individually or you can choose from different optional programs. Pannonhalma

Winery

The Benedictine monks, having settled on the Sacred Hill of Pannonia in 996, have always been closely associated with viticulture and wine making introduced by the Romans. At the beginning of the 1900’s, the Archabbey had about 100 hectares of vineyards in the direct vicinity of Pannonhalma and it also had plantations on the Somló Hill and in Tokaj-Hegyalja.The political and social upheaval that followed World War II put an end to the centuries-old tradition when the single-party state confiscated the Abbey’s vineyard holdings and winery. During the decades that followed, the monks never gave up hopes of reviving the legacy of excellence one day. Finally, it was 10 years after the Communist rule failed that the plans for rebirth took shape, according to that the Abbey Winery Pannonhalma on a floor space of 2000 m2 and with a storage capacity of 3000 hectolitres was established in 2003 in which the Abbey would control the majority interest in partnership with the MKB Bank as the minority owner.Without exception, our varietal wines (Tramini, Rajnai Rizling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir) bear the marks of the terroir, thus showing interesting and exciting samples in the world-wide range made of internationally known grape varieties, while our winery also aims at offering unique blends (St. Martinus, Tricollis, Hemina, Infusio) reflecting its peculiarity and message in an authentic way.

Monastery

We all are guests in this world and in each other’s life. The monastic experience determines how we treat our guests, and this experience takes special care of the visitor. This very same experience reminds us that both the guest and the host need to be attentive and open to make the encounter possible. The monastery of Pannonhalma, as far as possible, is pleased to welcome pilgrims, visitors who seek to find silence, and tourists whoi wish to obtain a better understanding of the Present by beholdinh its reflection in the Past. Having been constructed in diverse styles over the course of many centuries, the buildings of the monastery preserve the messages of different ages, and yet still give the impression of an harmonious unit. The artifacts can still be seen today obtain a unique radiance due to the fact that they are being used in accordance with their original function by a living monastic community. Though the monastery is open to the public, there are nevertheless places where only the members of the monastic community are allowed to enter. Here everything seeks to serve the purpose that the centuries-old Benedictine way of life may still be nurtured by silence and prayer.

Monastery The Arboretum and Herbal Garden

Monks in ancient times grew and collected herbs with great care for the benefit of the sick, Data demonstrating scientific examination and landscaping of the monastery’s natural environs reach back centuries. In 1830 as many as 80 tree and bush species were to be found on the Archabbey’s lands. It was through the design of Fabian Szeder in the 1840’s that the current form of the arboretum took shape.

Today the arboretum has several hundreds of tree and bush species, many of which are rare species and varieties in Hungary. The Arboretum of the Archabbey is a place for recreation and relaxation, but it is also home to educational work and scientific reserach. In addition to these values, the area also has a rich songbird population.
